Full Website and Twitter Background: Blog Out Loud
Blog Out Loud is an open-mike night for bloggers in Ottawa. Held annually, it features 21 local bloggers reading aloud their favourite post of the past year, while photo bloggers display their art in a slide show. It’s a social evening, an event where bloggers connect with old friends and finally get to meet writers they’ve been admiring online. For BOLO, we did a full website design from the ground up using WordPress. We handled all aspects of the WordPress install and customization, selected and customized the theme, and chose appropriate plugins to help manage the site. We...

Tudor Robins is an Ottawa-area freelance writer. She’s known for everything from magazine articles to professionally written resumes to award-winning short stories. She’s currently working on several projects including a YA novel. We built Tudor a WordPress site that was very clean and simple. She wanted something with lots of white space, a neutral colour scheme, and lots of emphasis on words, not flash. We helped her choose a simple theme then made some custom changes to the layout and spacing. We designed her a custom header and changed the colour scheme to match. We configured...

Lee Ann is a freelance writer in the Ottawa area. She’s already self-published one book – a family history called The Granger Chronicles – and is on track to publish a new book on the history of the Muskoka Road with Dundurn Press in the fall of 2012. The site we built for her is pure HTML and CSS. We used Javascript and CSS to power a variety of menus and set up a clean navigation structure to clearly guide readers around the site, which includes a set of interactive family tree pages. We worked with Lee Ann to pick a colour scheme, font, and header image that reflected...

We built this site from scratch for the W.O. Mitchell E.S. School Council. It’s actually a Joomla site, not a WordPress site, although much of the design work and text composition is the same as for a WordPress site. In this case, the client wanted to go with Joomla for its user-database capabilities. This site contains a huge amount of information, and our biggest challenge was setting up the menu so that everything was easy to access. As well, parents can log into the site to sign up to volunteer for certain events, and to register to receive the school’s newsletter. In design,...

Fit for a Kid is the personal blog of Liisa, and it’s a real find. Liisa is all about healthy eating, fit bodies, and happy minds, both for parents and for kids. She has endless ideas on how to take small steps to have a big impact on how you live in this world. We made her this custom header for her WordPress blog – she wanted something that showed off her kids being out and about at all times of the year. Her blog is hosted at WordPress, so after she selected one of their standard themes, we created a header that would match in size, look, feel, and colour scheme. (click to...
